On the loud layer the D5 (middle C being C4) sounds like someone used a sledge hammer sampling it and the duplexes ring out causing a noticeable surprise on stage. It reduces the bite of the piano but gets rid of the D5 surprise. You can also get rid of the loud layer by limiting the velocity to about 115. The samples sound like they used a dummy head mic which typically yields samples that fit your description perfectly. but that's only a bandaid on the real problem that the layers were not well assembled and tweeked so that the piano would articulate smoothly.
You have to bend the velocity curve to improve the sound.
converters are EVERYTHING so I would suggest investing in a good quality interface and stay away (in general) from cheapies.īut part of the problem you're having may be related to the inconsistent layer programming that prevents smooth articulation.
